My grandpa used to tell me and my friends a story about a girl named Penelope. There weren't a lot of details that I can remember, I always pictured her as a blond girl with long hair and sad blue eyes. Grandpa used to say that she died as a young girl, and that her ghost resided in the barn at my childhood home. I never knew if any of it was real, but my friend and I had some very strange experiences in the loft of that barn, like seeing shadowy shapes and her initials forming at an impossibly high part of the barn wall near the roof. I was never really scared of Penelope, but her presence, while likely just a story, was always in that barn, and on that land. In that old house. She was there, she lived there, and she probably still lives there, sitting quietly in the barn, watching the world change, forgotten.
